MLC NAND Flash memory: Aging effect and chip/channel emulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
This work presents an FPGA-based emulator that can be used for emulating NAND Flash memories, either at the chip or at the channel level, along with the effect of aging on their performance. The emulator is based on a reconfigurable hardware-software architecture, which enables accurate representation of various NAND Flash technologies, focusing especially on MLC cases. The presented architecture can be used for emulating memories at the chip and channel level, while the proposed hardware platform can be used as a valuable tool for developing and evaluating memory-related algorithms and techniques. In this paper, we analyze the architecture of the NAND Flash memory emulator and we present details about its internal functionality. Using experimental results, we demonstrate the high accuracy achieved when it is used to emulate specific MLC and TLC NAND Flash chips and we describe how this custom hardware can be used to emulate a complete NAND Flash channel, which consists of multiple NAND Flash chips that share a common data path and support the execution of pipelined commands. 2015 Elsevier B.V. Reducing SSD read latency via NAND flash program and erase suspension
In NAND flash memory, once a page program or block erase (P/E) command is issued to a NAND flash chip, the subsequent read requests have to wait until the timeconsuming P/E operation to complete. Preliminary results show that the lengthy P/E operations may increase the read latency by 2x on average. As NAND flashbased SSDs enter the enterprise server storage, this increased read latency caused ...
متن کاملA Mixed Flash Translation Layer Structure for SLC-MLC Combined Flash Memory System
NAND flash memory is a nonvolatile storage that is often used for its advantages of small size, non-mechanical, shock resistance, and low power consumption. With the recent drop in its price, NAND flash memory is on the verge of taking place of hard disk drive. Depending on the number of bits stored in a single cell, flash memory can be divided into SLC (single-level cell) NAND and MLC (multi-l...
متن کاملMLC vs SLC NAND Flash in Embedded Systems
There are two primary types of NAND flash technology: Single-level cell and multilevel cell. Multi-level cell was developed more recently, to achieve higher bit density, so that a much higher capacity flash chip could be created for a given die size. MLC might allow you to save cost for flash chips and save board space by reducing the number of chips you need. But before you rush to design MLC ...
متن کاملFlexFS: A Flexible Flash File System for MLC NAND Flash Memory
The multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory technology enables multiple bits of information to be stored on a single cell, thus making it possible to increase the density of the memory without increasing the die size. For most MLC flash memories, each cell can be programmed as a single-level cell or a multi-level cell during runtime. Therefore, it has a potential to achieve both the high perfo...
متن کاملImproving the reliability of chip-off forensic analysis of NAND flash memory devices
Digital forensic investigators often need to extract data from a seized device that contains NAND flash memory. Many such devices are physically damaged, preventing investigators from using automated techniques to extract the data stored within the device. Instead, investigators turn to chip-off analysis, where they use a thermal-based procedure to physically remove the NAND flash memory chip f...
